Save the conversation
How to save a WhatsApp chat
Keep a conversation you do not want to lose, store the export where you control it, and check what actually saved.
Read the guidePhones get lost, reset, and replaced, and a WhatsApp backup only ever goes back into WhatsApp. Export the conversations that matter, keep the file, and Preserve turns them into a page you can open, search, and share in any browser. It does not expire on its own.
WhatsApp keeps your conversations on your phone, not on its servers. Most chats are lost in one of four ordinary ways, and every one of them is easier to prevent than to undo.
Your chats live on your phone. Without a recent backup, a lost or wiped phone takes every conversation on it with it.
Your Google Account or iCloud holds one WhatsApp backup, and every new one overwrites it. A chat deleted before the next backup is gone from it too.
Deleting an old chat or its media to make room removes it from the phone, and from every backup made after that.
With Advanced Chat Privacy on, nobody in the chat can export it, and in a group the admins control that setting. Export while you still can.
Use all three. Keep backups on so WhatsApp can restore itself, keep the export as your own copy, and use Preserve to read that copy as a conversation and share the part that matters.
| WhatsApp backup | Exported chat file | Preserve page | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A copy WhatsApp restores into the app | A TXT transcript, or a ZIP with media | Your export laid out as a conversation |
| Read it outside WhatsApp | No | Yes, as timestamped lines of text | Yes, as chat bubbles in any browser |
| Survives the next backup | No, each backup replaces the last | Yes, it is a file you keep | Yes, it stays until you delete it |
| Share one part of it | No | Only by sending the whole file | Yes, from a first to a last message |
| Restore into WhatsApp | Yes | No | No |
On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name, then Export chat. Include media if the photos matter.
Save the TXT or ZIP somewhere you control, such as cloud storage and a computer. Leave it unchanged: it is your copy of record.
Your browser lays it out as a conversation. Search for a word or jump to a date, choose a first and last message, and create a link to come back to.
An export keeps the words, as a long file with a timestamp on every line. Preserve lays that file out as a conversation again, so it is something you will actually come back to and can pass on to the people who were part of it.
A conversation with someone who has died lives on one phone, in one app. Export it so the copy is yours, and read it when you are ready.
Keeping a loved one’s messagesThe first messages with a partner, years of a family group, a trip planned over months, kept as something you will actually reread.
Find an old message againWhat a landlord, employer, or seller agreed to, in order with the dates. Keep the original export too: Preserve does not make a chat evidence.
When you need a PDF insteadExport the chats that matter before a switch, a reset, or a repair, as well as using WhatsApp’s own transfer.
Move WhatsApp to a new phoneExport it from WhatsApp and keep the file. On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name, then Export chat. Save the TXT or ZIP somewhere you control, then open it in Preserve to read it as a conversation and keep the part that matters as a link.
Not on its own. A backup can only be restored into WhatsApp, not opened and read, and each new backup replaces the last, so a chat deleted before the next backup is gone from it. Keep backups on, and export the chats you never want to lose.
No. A chat shared through Preserve stays until you delete it. When you create it you get a master link that lets you delete the page whenever you want. Keep that link somewhere safe, because there are no accounts.
Choose Include media when you export, and WhatsApp packages the recent photos, videos, and voice notes it can attach in a ZIP with the transcript. Keep that ZIP as it is, and open it to check that the files you care about are there, because an export does not always carry every attachment.
Only if a copy still exists. If your last WhatsApp backup was made before you deleted it, restoring that backup can bring it back, and the other person may still have the chat and can export it for you. Preserve cannot recover messages: it works with what is in an export.
No, unless disappearing messages are on. In a chat with disappearing messages, each new message vanishes after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days, and a message that has disappeared is not in a later export or backup. Turn the timer off in that chat, then export what is left.
Yes. Any member can export a group chat in the same way as a one-to-one chat, unless Advanced Chat Privacy is on in that group, which only an admin can turn off. The export holds the messages on your phone, so it starts where your history in the group does.
Keep the original export unchanged, and keep the phone the chat is on. A Preserve page is a readable copy to share, not evidence, and no tool can make a conversation admissible; ask a lawyer what your case needs. If a process needs a fixed document, print the export to PDF.
Only the people you send the link to. The link is private and unguessable, and it is not listed or indexed by search engines, but it has no password, so anyone who has it can open it and forward it. Your export is read in your browser, and only the messages in the range you choose are uploaded.
No. An export, and a Preserve page made from it, are copies to read outside WhatsApp. To get chats back into WhatsApp, use a WhatsApp backup or a transfer between phones.
No. Preserve Chat is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by WhatsApp or Meta.
