How to export a WhatsApp group chat
Exporting a group works the same way as exporting a one-to-one chat, but a group raises its own questions: whether you are allowed to export it, why the history may start later than the group did, and how many other people’s messages and phone numbers you are about to pass on.

Export a group chat step by step
You do not need to be a group admin. Any member can export the copy of the group that is on their own phone, unless the group has Advanced Chat Privacy turned on.
- Open the group in WhatsApp.
- On Android, tap the three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the group name at the top to open the group info, then scroll down to Export chat.
- Choose Without media for a text-only transcript, or Include media when the photos and voice notes matter.
- Save the export somewhere you control, then open it and check the first and last dates.
Why Export chat is missing in a group
WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy setting stops everyone in a chat from exporting it. In a group it applies to every member at once, and group admins can change it. If Export chat has gone from a group you are in, check the group info for Advanced Chat Privacy and ask an admin whether it is on.
The restriction is deliberate. If the admins keep it on, the group has decided its messages should stay inside WhatsApp, and there is no supported way around that.
What a group export contains
Your copy of the group lives on your phone, so the export starts where your history does. Messages sent before you joined are generally not on your phone and will not be in the file. Nor will messages you cleared, messages that vanished under disappearing messages, or view once media.
- Messages as they are on your phone, each with a date, a time, and the sender.
- Senders named the way your phone names them: saved contacts by the name in your address book, and people you have not saved usually by their phone number.
- Group notices, such as people joining, leaving, or being added, and changes to the group name.
- Photos, videos, and voice notes only if you chose Include media, and then only the recent media WhatsApp attaches.
Long-running and busy groups
A family or friends group that has been active for years can hold more history than one export carries. WhatsApp limits how much an export includes, and including media lowers that limit. Check the first date in the transcript. If it starts later than you expected, export again Without media to get more of the text.
A busy group is also hard to follow as a transcript: overlapping threads, replies to messages from hours earlier, and dozens of people talking at once. A chat export viewer lays it out as a conversation and lets you search for the phrase or the person you are looking for.
Other people’s messages and numbers
A group export is not only your conversation. It holds messages written by everyone in the group and, for anyone you have not saved as a contact, their phone number. Before sending the file anywhere, consider whether those people would expect their messages to leave the group.
Sending the whole export is rarely necessary. If someone needs to see one plan, one decision, or one exchange, share that part and leave the rest of the group out of it.
