WhatsApp chat export not working? What to check
Most export problems come down to a few causes: a privacy setting on the chat, a limit on how much history one export carries, media that was never included, or a file too big for the place you are sending it. Work out which one you have before trying again.

Match the problem to the cause
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Export chat is not in the menu | Advanced Chat Privacy is on in that chat, or you are looking in the wrong place. | Check the chat info for Advanced Chat Privacy, and look under the right menu for your phone. |
| The transcript starts later than the chat did | The export hit its limit and kept only the most recent messages. | Export again Without media and check the first date. |
| Lines say media omitted | The chat was exported Without media, or the file was not available to attach. | Export with Include media, and save important photos and voice notes separately. |
| Some messages are missing | They were deleted, disappeared, were view once, or were sent before you joined. | Compare the export with the chat. An export cannot include what the phone no longer has. |
| The export will not send | The file is larger than the app or service you picked will accept. | Save it to your files or cloud storage instead, or export Without media. |
| The file will not open or looks garbled | It is still zipped, or the app opening it misreads its characters. | Extract the ZIP and open the TXT in a text editor that supports UTF-8. |
Export chat is not showing
Start with where you are looking. On Android, Export chat is inside the chat’s three-dot menu, under More. On iPhone, it is near the bottom of the contact or group info screen that opens when you tap the name at the top of the chat. WhatsApp’s export instructions are written for the phone apps, so look on your phone rather than on a linked computer.
If the option really is gone, the most likely reason is Advanced Chat Privacy. When it is on, nobody in that chat can export it. In a one-to-one chat either person can turn it on. In a group, the admins control it.
There is no supported way around the setting, and that is its purpose. Ask the other person, or a group admin, whether they are willing to turn it off. If they are not, the conversation is meant to stay inside WhatsApp.
If neither applies, update WhatsApp. Menus move between versions, and an old version may not match the steps you are following.
The export stops before the start of the chat
An export does not always carry the whole history. WhatsApp limits how much one export includes, and when a chat is longer than that, the export keeps the most recent messages and leaves out the oldest. WhatsApp’s current help page does not give a number. Earlier versions of it put the limit at the latest 40,000 messages without media and 10,000 with media. Treat that as a guide to the scale, not a promise.
Including media lowers the limit, so the quickest fix is to export again Without media and check the first date in the transcript. If you also need the photos, make a second export with media and keep both: one for the full text, one for the recent attachments.
If the first date is still later than you expected, the older messages may not be on the phone at all, for example because the chat was cleared or restored from a backup that did not include them.
The transcript says media omitted
In a Without media export, each photo, video, voice note, or document is replaced by a line saying the media was omitted. The attachment was never in the file, and no viewer or converter can bring it back from that line.
Include media attaches files to the export, but WhatsApp says it adds the most recent media, not necessarily every file in a long chat. Media you deleted from your phone, or never downloaded, cannot be attached either. View once photos and videos are not saved on the phone, so they cannot be exported at all.
If particular photos or voice notes matter, save them from the chat individually as well, so you are not relying on the export to carry them.
Some messages are not in the export
An export is a copy of what your phone holds at the moment you make it. If a message is not in the chat on your screen, it will not be in the file.
- A message deleted for everyone leaves only a deletion notice. The original text is gone.
- In a chat with disappearing messages turned on, messages vanish when their timer runs out unless someone kept them, and an export made afterwards cannot include them.
- View once media never stays in the chat, so it cannot be exported.
- In a group, messages from before you joined are generally not on your phone.
- A chat that was cleared, or restored from an older backup, contains only what is left on the phone.
The export will not send or save
After you choose Without media or Include media, WhatsApp hands the export to your phone’s share options. An export with media can be larger than an email attachment limit or what a messaging app will accept, so the send fails.
Save it to your phone’s files, or to cloud storage you control, and move it from there. If the text is what you need, exporting Without media produces a much smaller file.
The file will not open, or looks wrong
An export with media usually arrives as a ZIP. Extract it first. The transcript is the TXT file inside, and the media files sit beside it.
If names or emoji show up as strings of odd characters, the app is reading the file with the wrong character encoding. Open it in a text editor that supports UTF-8, which most current editors do.
Voice notes are saved as Opus audio files, which not every player opens. If one will not play on a computer, try a media player that supports Opus.
An export cannot be put back into WhatsApp
If you are trying to move a chat to a new phone, an export is the wrong tool. WhatsApp states that exported chat history cannot be re-imported, because it is a text file and not a backup. Use WhatsApp’s backup or chat transfer for that, and use the export for reading, keeping, and sharing.
